Does it matter if its black and white??

Ok - I think I'm going to do it. Re do my kitchen that is. And I really really want a black and white checkerboard floor. What do you think? I figure if Kate Spade has one, it must be ok. But my mother thought it a tad weird. Now I LOVE my mother, but her and I have VERY different tastes - so much so that whatever she suggests, I normally do the opposite. But just recently she saved me from making a grave mistake re my carpet. Help! Please? Image via flickr

Hi Kimberlee!

I found your blog through our shared interest in the same books, and it is GORGEOUS! I will definitely be back here to relax with your fashion-inpired imagery.

I noticed you listed The Time Traveler's Wife. Although I left that one off my list, I loved that back. It was so creative the way the narrative moved back and forward, and so heartbreakingly romantic as well.

If you like, check my blog, although it's quite different from yours.

Best,
Marie

Love black and white floors. Mine are wood that has been painted and then destressed so it looks worn. My friend has it in linolium tiles and she has a hard time keeping the white clean. Tile might be a whole different story. Sorry if I made it more confusing. Heidi

A great friend has black & white lino and it looks fabulous BUT she is forever cleaning it (well the white bits anyway!) It shows every mark and looks grotty with high traffic...just something to consider.

I love the idea! i really love the idea of the wood painted black and white and distressed in the previous comment by heidi.
if you do linoleum or vinyl tile, it is hard to keep the white clean. I would seal them with vinyl sealer. I specify sealer on all my projects that I use vinyl, it's easier to maintain.
Tile is hard to keep the grout clean.

Even though it is hard to keep clean, i think you should go for it! I love Kate Spade's kitchen and I am sure I would love yours with the checker board floor!!!!

Many years ago I was babysitting for a family who had far too much money...and consequently an amazingly beautiful house - and the one thing that has stuck in my mind from their home was the checkerboard floor in the kitchen - I love it! I remember thinking it looked so amazing, and from that day forward I've always associated checkerboard floors with the trendiest of people so perfectly fitting that you'd want one! Go for it! You'll have the coolest little pad in all of Norwood xx

oh, man...that distressed painted wood idea is AMAZING! i've always been drawn to this floor, but it's hard to pull off, i think...

judging from your taste on this blog? you could easily easily do it. did i say easily?!

A friend of mine had a black and white checkerboard floor in her kitchen a few years ago, and I really loved it!

Depending on the setting, it's a look that can be funky or elegant. I say go for it, although it sounds like keeping the white clean could be a bit tiresome.

Only if you can do it in French marble Miss K! Not sure the lino tile look is really you!

Hi Kimberlee,
I had this floor in my kitchen (black and white lino) and it looked great but was a complete NIGHTMARE to clean! You had to clean it every single day otherwise it looked so grubby. xx

Wow - thank you so much for all your comments!

I think the general consensus is - yes its super cute but its a bitch to keep clean!!!! Hmmmmmmm, maybe if I do it in tiles it may be easier??

I love black and white checkered floors. My mom has done this with her kitchen floor and it's gorgeous! I have pictures posted on my flickr, if you'd like to check them out! Good luck with your project, can't wait to see the finished product :)

That's funny-what your mom said-my (very traditional) mother HAS a black and white checkerboard floor in her kitchen! It's a time-tested classic. Trust me, she'd never go anywhere near "weird" territory.
